College football selections, schedule: predictions against spread, odds for top 25 games in week 3

After a week that turned the 2022 college football season on its head, the favorite top-25 events in Week 3 on Saturday will probably be a little more cautious. With two games and several top-level non-conference games still to be played between ranked opponents on the schedule, there is still a lot to shake before league play begins to kick off the month of September.

Most notable is Saturday Nightcap as No. 13 Miami tour No. 24 Texas A&M, with the Aggies fresh off one of the above troubling losses to Appalachian State. The Hurricanes are looking to flex under first-year coach Mario Cristóbal, while Aggies coach Jimbo Fischer is aiming to keep his seat from getting too hot. Speaking of Cristobal, his former team is featured in that other top 25 showdown as No. 25 Oregon hosts No. 12 BYU. The Cougars are making themselves felt after a big home win over Baylor, while the Ducks are still aiming to bounce back from a rough performance against Georgia in Week 1.

Also on the slate are No. 6 Oklahoma welcoming rival Nebraska with coach Scott Frost’s firing of the Cornhuskers, newly minted No. 1 Georgia visiting former SEC rival South Carolina and Auburn’s No. 22 from Penn State. Tough non-convention testing welcomed. Featured game on CBS. In other words, there will be no shortage of stories before Saturday ends.

Be sure to keep up with CBS Sports throughout the day for college football coverage from early kickoff. Let’s take a look at our expert picks for the best games in Week 3.

No. 6 Oklahoma in Nebraska

Featured games , Nebraska Cornhuskers vs Oklahoma Sooners

afternoon | fox, fuboTV (Try it for free)- Oklahoma hasn’t faced a Power Five foe under new coach Brent Venables. In fact, it had two victories against teams ranked No. 95 and No. 108 in the CBS Sports 131 rankings. While Nebraska is struggling, the talent jump — along with a new coaching direction — makes the game a little tougher than the initial results. A worse Nebraska team played a better Oklahoma team to within seven points last season. With the game being held in Lincoln, Nebraska, don’t expect things to get out of hand. Choose: Nebraska (+11.5) — Shehan Jayarajahi

No. 1 Georgia in South Carolina

Featured games , South Carolina Gamecock vs Georgia Bulldogs

afternoon | ESPN, fuboTV (Try it for free)- South Carolina wreaks havoc on the offensive line magic disaster in this matchup. Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler has been struggling to defend and hasn’t shown a very quick attack through two games. Georgia’s defense looks like it hardly dropped after taking five players in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and the Bulldogs may be able to propel South Carolina to double digits. While a respected former assistant to coach Kirby Smart is unlikely to drive the score, Georgia should cover, even if his offense keeps things low. Prediction: Georgia (-24.5) — David Kobe

Number 22 Penn State in Auburn

Featured games , Auburn Tigers vs Penn State Nittany Lions

3:30 pm | cbs,, cbs sports app , While Penn State’s two teams have big wins, the Nittany Lions didn’t look great on the road against Purdue. As a result, I am unwilling to rely on the Nittany Lions as the road favorite against Auburn, even though Auburn may not have inspired much confidence. The best units on the field in this matchup will be defenses, so it’s hard to imagine any team ever manages to pull off too far from the other. This makes Auburn and Points an attractive option. Prediction: Auburn (+3) — Tom Fornelli

No. 12 at BYU No. 25 Oregon

Featured games , Oregon Ducks vs BYU Cougars

3:30 pm | fox, fuboTV (Try it for free)- Simply put: BYU is better than Oregon in most position groups. Quarterback Jaren Hall flashed his NFL hand in an upset at Baylor last weekend despite missing his top two achievable goals. The offensive and defensive lines have excelled for most of the last three seasons. Secondary played at a higher level, while Christopher Brooks is trailing well. In contrast, Oregon has gone 1-4 in their last five FBS matchups and are out 201-90. With victories over Baylor, USC, Utah and four other Power Five foes in the past year, don’t expect the cougars to be intimidated by Oregon’s recruiting stars. Prediction: BYU (+3.5) — Jayarajahi

UTSA at No. 21 Texas

Featured games , Texas Longhorns vs UTSA Roadrunners

8 o’clock | Longhorn Network — It’s a potential trap game for the Longhorns, but I think they’ll be out winning. However, the position of the Hudson card makes me hesitant to take Texas as the 12.5-point favorite. The card is at its best when he’s playing with his feet, and an ankle injury can limit that part of his play. On top of that, Jeff Traylor’s squad has plenty of motivation against one of the Big 12’s premier institutions. Texas gets the win, but the Roadrunners cover. Prediction: UTSA (+12.5) — Austin Nivison

No. 13 Miami No. 24 Texas A&M. Feather

Featured games , Texas A&M Aggies vs. Miami (FL) Hurricanes

9 pm | ESPN, fuboTV (Try it for free)- It’s going to come down to the fight for the quarterback, and the winner of that fight is clear. Tyler Van Dyke is more talented, he has better protection and more weapons than Haynes King. The Van Dyke and Hurricanes offense would set the pace, resulting in the game being played in the 30s. Texas A&M won’t hang. Multiple mistakes by Texas A&M in the second half would not only give Miami cover, but also a straight win. Prediction: Miami (+5.5) — Barrett Sally
