Stargazers, take note: Thursday night’s full moon will be a little bigger and more vibrant than usual. According to NASA, this is also the last supermoon of the year.
The sturgeon moon – according to a 1930 edition of the Maine Farmer’s Almanac, the Native Algonquin people named it for the large fish that are especially abundant in the Great Lakes at this time of year – all this for casual attention Wouldn’t qualify observers but experts say it is reminiscent of the wonder of seeing a full moon.
“It’s big. It’s technically bright, but not so much that you walk out and feel naturally and instinctively something super different,” said Jackie Faherty, an astrophysicist at the American Museum of Natural History. That said, it is wonderful to see the full moon rise.”
Here’s what to know about Sturgeon Moon and how to see it.
What is Supermoon?
The term, coined in 1979 by astrologer Richard Knoll, is not an official astronomical term.
A supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit. This is what makes a supermoon bigger and brighter than other full moons.
NASA said that these celestial events happen about three or four times a year. The latest case is from last month.
How noticeable is this?
It’s not all that noticeable. But it can still be an amazing sight on a clear night, said Noah Petro, a planetary geologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.
A supermoon is about 17 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter when the full Moon is at the apogee, or its farthest point from Earth, he said.
Still, the difference between a supermoon and a full moon is what happens when the Moon is farther away from Earth.
“The difference is only apparent in photographs that compare the perigee full moon to the apogee full moon,” said James Lattice, an astronomer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
When is this happening?
The moon has been visible since Wednesday, but the sturgeon moon will be visible on Thursday at 9:36 p.m. Eastern time, NASA said.
Dr. Faherty recommended that people who want to see the supermoon start watching the moon rise soon after sunset.
Thursday night will be busy for astronomical events. The Perseids meteor shower, one of the year’s most popular, will peak Thursday night through Friday morning.
Also, on Thursday night, Saturn will be visible near the Moon. According to NASA, on Sunday, it will be closest to Earth, and will be most vivid than at any other time this year.
The Moon will be fully visible from Saturday morning.
how can i watch it?
Just go outside and look up. It can help to go somewhere with less light pollution.
Dr Petro said, “I would suggest to someone who has clear skies tonight, get out around sunset and look east, unless there are no tall trees or buildings blocking your view, and from bright light.” Try to escape.”
“If it’s cloudy,” he said, “you can try tomorrow morning before sunrise or tomorrow night.”
NASA gives tips for photographing the moment in its full glory.
When is the next supermoon?
You have to wait a year. The next one won’t happen until August 2023, Dr. Petro said.
