Florham Park, NJ — New York fans chanted Mike White’s name during their season-opening loss to the Ravens on Sunday, but the Jets aren’t planning a quarterback change for Week 2.
A source told ESPN that veteran Joe Flacco, who replaced injured Zach Wilson, will start against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.
Jets coach Robert Saleh indicated on Monday that Flacco would “likely” resume play, but raised some doubts by saying all positions were being reviewed. A source said the Jets never seriously considered benching flaco for the popular White, who became a fan favorite with a 405-yard passing performance in an upset to the Cincinnati Bengals last season.
Flacco, 37, struggled against the Ravens as the Jets did not score a touchdown until the final minute of the game. According to Next Gen Stats data, his lack of mobility was evident, as he was dismissed three times, hit 11 times and pressed 19 times.
Flaco completed 37 of 59 passes for 307 yards with one touchdown and one interception. In fairness, the run-pass balance was out of line, as the Jets called 62 pass plays out of a total of 79 plays. The former Super Bowl MVP also played behind a shuffled offensive line, with George Feynt returning on a left tackle and rookie Max Mitchell starting with a right tackle. The changes were made last week following a left shoulder injury to Duane Brown, who was placed on injured reserve.
Wilson, who had arthroscopic knee surgery on August 16, is expected to miss at least two more games. He is still not practicing, but will do some light individual exercises this week.
