The problem of cellphone connectivity on the underground section of Pune Metro is now over

Passengers traveling in metro train in Pune city will not face the problem of mobile connectivity, especially from the underground Shivajinagar to Swargate. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro), which is implementing the Pune Metro project, is employing these building solution systems to ensure mobile range during underground movement.

“While traveling through the underground section of Pune Metro, commuters will not face any mobile range problem. This is because we are setting up an in building solution system that will ensure complete mobile connectivity,” MahaMetro spokesperson Hemant Sonawane told The Indian Express on Saturday.

“Whether it is underground areas or buildings with heavy doses of E-glass, concrete or steel, outdoor wireless licensed RF signals cannot travel through them, resulting in poor mobile coverage. The in-building DAS (Distributed Antenna System) works to filter and combine the wireless outdoor signal with other carrier signals to ensure that signals reach indoor devices. In-building DAS helps to carry mobile signal in a building. This requires a Base Transceiver Station (BTS) which is being set up.

Sonawane said that in the route from PCMC headquarters to Swargate station of Pune Metro, the route from Shivajinagar station to Swargate station is underground. “The route length on this section is 6 km and has 5 underground stations – Shivajinagar, Civil Court, Budhwar Peth, Mandai and Swargate.

June 4 marked the completion of the final phase of tunnel construction from the Swargate to Budhwar Peth underground section of the Pune Metro project. TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) Mula II has achieved a breakthrough on Wednesday at Budhwar Peth Metro Station. This milestone achieved recently by Pune Metro indicates the completion of 100% tunneling work of total 12 km underground tunnel.

On Friday, Maha Metro said that the work of laying track, overhead equipment (OHE) and signaling system in the underground section of Pune Metro has started.

“Before laying the tracks, the bottom/bottom of the circular rim of the tunnel is concreted and leveled for the tracks. After that a concrete base is made according to the width between the two trucks. The fixing components required for truck fitting are to be installed on the track plinth. After these works the installation of 57 meter track has been completed. Pieces of this long track are taken down 30 meters in an underground tunnel. These works have started simultaneously in both the Civil Court and Range Hill,” Maha Metro said in a statement.

With the installation of the track, the work of OHE has also started. “The work of installing electric cables on Range Hill Tunnel has started. Wiring fixtures are installed when casting tunnel sections so that there is no need to drill or nail anywhere in the tunnel.

The work of installation of data cable in underground route, OFC cable for signal system and telecommunication system is also in full swing. Also, the work is going on to fit the utilities required for telecom and signal in the underground route.

Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director, Maha Metro said, “The work of track, OHE and signaling system in the underground line will be completed in the next few months. With this, we will be able to test the metro in the underground section in the next few months.
