‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2’ Dashes Past $400M Global Box Office Milestone

Through Tuesday, the worldwide box office for Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has surpassed $400 million,

with $190.6 million coming from domestic sales and $209.5 from foreign markets. With Japan and Hong Kong remaining to reveal,

its ranking, which is presently No. 8 globally in 2022, is anticipated to rise a few spots. A threequel was promoted at Paramount's CineEurope presentation today.

The sequel to "The Little Blue Critter" initially had a quick overseas start in late March and expanded markets over several months.

Up to this point, the UK ($34.3M), Mexico ($22.1M), France ($17.3M), Australia ($16.6M), and Brazil ($12M) have been the company's top 5 foreign markets.

Sonic 2 launched in April with $71M domestically, outperforming the 2020 original film's three-day opening numbers, which had debuted during a holiday weekend.

The first movie eventually made $171M overseas and close to $320M worldwide, but it also had its legs chopped off as the coronavirus epidemic was only getting started.

It eventually peaked at No. 6 globally and No. 3 for the Hollywood studios in 2020.
